Europe's longest lives — and the years lost

Spain has held Europe's longevity crown for over a decade: 86.5 years of female life expectancy by 2024, a full seven ahead of Bulgaria. But the number that stops you isn't the gap between countries — it's how unevenly 2020 and 2021 fell on them.

Life expectancy moves slowly — a tenth of a year here, two-tenths there. Which is exactly why the drop in 2020–21 is so startling when you plot the actual values: 24 of these 28 countries fell in 2020, and the falls range from nothing at all to nearly four years. Decades of slow gain, undone in twenty-four months in some places and not touched in others.

The fall nobody shared equally

Bulgaria gave up 3.7 years — from 78.8 in 2019 to 75.1 in 2021, the deepest fall in the set by a wide margin. Behind it: Slovakia −3.0, Romania −2.9, Lithuania −2.4, Poland −2.3. Now the other end of the same list: Norway lost nothing at all, Iceland a tenth of a year, Denmark two-tenths, Malta three-tenths, Ireland four-tenths.

Put plainly, Bulgaria's fall was more than nine times Ireland's, and Norway's was zero. On a ranking chart this is nearly invisible — a country can plunge three years and barely move down the table, because its neighbours are falling too. Only the values show it.

Even the leader slipped, once

Spain leads in 2013 (86.1 years) and still leads in 2024 (86.5) — first place in eleven of these twelve years. The exception is telling: in 2020 Spain fell to second, its 85.2 edged out by France's 85.3, before recovering the top spot the following year. Spain's own 2019 peak of 86.7 took four years to reach again. Behind it in 2024 sit Switzerland (85.9) and France (85.8); the top of the table is Mediterranean-Alpine and, apart from that one year, remarkably stable.

The recovery went the other way

Here is the part that inverts the story. Six of the 28 are still below their 2019 level in 2024 — and they are not the countries that fell hardest. They are Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Iceland: the wealthy west, down by a tenth to four-tenths of a year, plateaued near the top of the range.

Meanwhile the steepest twelve-year gains belong to the east: Latvia +2.3 years, Lithuania +2.0, then Czechia and Estonia at +1.7. Bulgaria, after the deepest fall on the continent, finished 2024 seven-tenths above where it was in 2019. The slowest gains over the same span are the Netherlands (+0.1) and France (+0.2).

So the continental gap narrowed — but barely, and not smoothly: 7.5 years between best and worst in 2013, 7.0 in 2024. Half a year of convergence in twelve, with a two-year detour in the middle where it briefly widened. The ranking view catches some of this as churn — Ireland climbed six places over the period, Greece slid eight — but ranks tell you the order changed, not by how much.

Why the chart is built the way it is

This chart replaced a bump chart of the same data, and the reason is instructive. Ranks made the movement legible but stripped out the quantity: 28 near-parallel lines that told you Ireland passed Norway, and nothing about the four years Bulgaria lost. Worse, the rank view devoted most of its canvas to two columns of country names and left the middle nearly empty.

So it now plots the values, with two ways to read them. Level shows real years, 74 to 87, where the east–west spread is a physical distance on the page. Years lost indexes every country to its own 2019, pinning all 28 lines to zero in that year so the depth of each fall can be compared directly — which turns the pandemic period into a single V-shaped crater with the worst-hit countries plunging furthest below the line. Colour carries the same variable in both views: how far a country fell below its 2019 level, deep rose through to cool teal.

Every figure in the frame — the leader, the 7.0-year gap, Bulgaria's −3.7, the six-of-28 count — is computed from the embedded series at render time. Nothing is typed by hand, so nothing can quietly drift out of step with the data.

Novice tip: give the agent the raw value for each year and let it do the derived work — the ranking, the index against a chosen baseline year, the biggest faller. Hand it ranks or percentage changes and you have thrown away the quantity, which is usually where the story is.

The takeaway

Twelve years of data, and the headline is not who won. It is that a slow, shared, decades-long gain can be interrupted very unevenly — three-and-a-half years erased in one country and none in another, a few hundred miles apart — and that the recovery from it has run in the opposite direction to the fall, with the poorest countries climbing fastest and the richest flat.

The design lesson generalises: when a measure moves slowly, ranking it makes the movement visible but discards the magnitude. If the magnitude is the story — and with life expectancy it usually is — plot the values, and index them to a baseline when you want falls of different sizes to be directly comparable.
